Basic Rules – How Blackjack Works
We will start with the rules, since that is the most practical way to explain how blackjack works, but we won’t bother you with too many details. You are probably familiar that in blackjack everything revolves around the number 21. The main goal is to have cards with the total value of 21 (this is called blackjack) or as close to 21 as possible without going over that number. To be more precise, having in mind that blackjack is played against the dealer, the main goal is to be closer to 21 than the dealer. In case you haven’t noticed it yet, blackjack is played against the dealer and not against other players, although there is a small chance you will be the only player at the table (at least when land-based casinos are concerned).
Each player receives two cards, face up. The total value of these cards is determined as follows: Ace counts as 1 or 11, cards from 2 to 10 count as their face values, other cards (King, Queen and Jack) count as 10. The highest possible value of the aforementioned two cards is 21 (one Ace and one 10-point card). The player then needs to make a deci-sion whether to ask for another card (Hit) trying to get closer to 21 or satisfy with the cards he has already received (Stand). Then the dealer has to make the same decision. No matter which type of blackjack you are playing, you will always see only one dealer’s card face up and the second card will be revealed once you (and rest of the players) stand. If any participant (players or dealer) receive cards that value more than 21 in total they go bust, i.e. loses the game. If both sides (player and dealer) have cards with the same value, the game is tie (or push).
In conclusion, there are two ways to beat the dealer:
- Your cards total 21 or less, but still closer to 21 than the dealer’s or
- Your cards total 21 or less and the dealer busts.
Player’s Moves and Decisions
We have explained above that the player may decide to Hit or Stand, depending on the cards that have been previously dealt to him/her. Even though these two moves are ba-sic, there will always be a couple of others at your disposal, so it is necessary to remem-ber them.
Double Down (or simply Double): This option allows you to double your initial bet if your first two cards seem promising. In this case you will be dealt only one additional card.
Split: If you receive two identical cards in the first draw, you are allowed to split them into two separate hands and continue with the game playing by two independent hands at the same time.
Insurance: If the dealer’s upcard is an Ace, the players are given the chance to take “in-surance” before the dealer’s other card is revealed. Insurance is a side-bet and it is won if the dealer’s other card (called “hole card” in American blackjack) is worth 10 points (dealer has a blackjack).
Blackjack Payouts
These payouts are for the majority of online blackjack games, although the following numbers may vary depending on the game you play:
Blackjack pays 3:2
Other wins pay 1:1
Insurance pays 2:1
Variations of the Game
One might think that the game with such long history exists in hundreds of variations to-day, but that is not entirely true. Yes, of course, the game had branched out into many alternative forms, but surprisingly, the main differences are so tiny that it won’t take you much time to adopt them and play different types of blackjack as a pro. Blackjack is a more-or-less unified game all over the world and you will notice American Blackjack and European Blackjack as the two most distinguished forms.
In American Blackjack the dealer receives two cards – one face-up and other face-down, while in European Blackjack the dealer receives only one card. This doesn’t seem like something relevant, but it may change the game substantially, since in Ameri-can blackjack the dealer checks if he has a blackjack (peeks to see the “hole” card if his upcard is an Ace or a 10-valued card) and stops the game before the player makes his moves. Other differences include the number of card decks in play, splitting rules, double down rules and so on, but nothing that will mean too much to a novice.
Try not to be confused with numerous blackjack games under different names (Double Exposure Blackjack, Perfect Pairs Blackjack, Lucky Ladies Blackjack, Suit ‘Em Up Blackjack and so on). Each of these games has the same core structure and you will be able to adapt in seconds. They simply offer something more than the base game (usually an interesting side bet), but that is all.
How to Play Online Blackjack
Inside the brick & mortar casinos you will have real players sitting next to you and a real dealer at the other side of the table. At online casinos, there will be only you which is the main difference between “real” and online blackjack. However, do not think that you will be losing anything, on the contrary. Internet-based casinos offer many amenities you won’t find anywhere else. For instance, the number of blackjack games and tables at online casinos overcomes any land-based casino in the world. Second, you won’t be dis-turbed by other players, their wins and losses, joy and despair, and will be able to focus on your game completely. Third, if you do not like playing against the machine, opt for live dealer blackjack, tune in to live streams from real casino studios and play in real time.
It is worth mentioning that online blackjack games are equipped with powerful, user-friendly software that allows you to place your bets, make your moves and play the game effortlessly. Additionally, the game will be played at your own pace and if you wish to speed up a bit, the software will follow you impeccably.
Useful Tips
Now, it is a time to quit a theory and return to the real excitement only blackjack can pro-vide. Well, not quite yet. Being dedicated players for years, we are free to throw you some tips and help you glide though the blackjack world more easily.
1. Be careful with side bets: Blackjack is known and appreciated as one of the best paying casino games in the world. Played at optimal strategy, blackjack of-fers a house edge of below 1%, but that is only the case with the main game. Numerous side bets offer larger payouts, but take more than give in the long run. We do not say to avoid them completely, just to think twice before you decide to use them.
2. Develop/adopt a strategy: One of the worst things in blackjack is relying on your intuition only. It is better to use one of many strategies developed by the dedicated players in the past or create your own and stick with it than to change the strategy frequently and play on a hunch.
3. Hold your nerve: Even if you are losing the tenth hand in a row, there is no rea-son to give up on your strategy. Be patient.
4. Play responsibly. We know that these two words annoy many of you, but they are very important. Never place bets that can make you lose your entire stack on a few hands. Blackjack is a game for clever players; prove to yourself and the others you are one of them.
